I loved my experience with Alexandra. She took a lot of time with me to ensure that I was happy with the cut from looking at my inspiration photos to answering all my questions via email prior to my appointment. What Questions Should I Ask My Hair (Health) Coach?

If you've been staring at your scalp in the mirror, wondering what on earth is going on, you're not alone. Maybe you've tried a new shampoo, switched up your routine, and still nothing is getting better. Maybe you don't even know where to start. You just know something feels off, and you're a little embarrassed to talk about it.

That feeling? That's exactly where my clients are when they first come to me. And it's exactly why asking the right questions when you work with a hair coach can change everything.

I'm a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach (NBC-HWC) and a practicing hairstylist for over a decade who began studying Ayurvedic Medicine in 2017. What Ayurveda (Ancient Indian Medical System) gave me — and what I bring to every client session — is a deep understanding that you have to get to the root cause of a health concern if you truly want to heal it. A scalp issue is rarely just a scalp issue. And a hair coaching session is rarely just about your hair.

Here's what you should be asking — and why each question matters more than you might think.

What Is Actually Causing My Scalp Issues?

This is the most important question you can walk in with, and it's one most people are afraid to ask because they assume the answer is complicated. It doesn't have to be.

When I started connecting the dots between my clients' scalp concerns and their overall health, everything shifted. A flaky, inflamed, or oily scalp is often your body sending a signal. It might be related to stress, diet, hormonal shifts, or the products you're using — often a combination of all of the above.

One of the most common misconceptions I see is that one scalp treatment will fix everything. I understand why people think that. We're used to going to a professional, getting a treatment, and feeling better. But the scalp doesn't work that way. Healing requires behavior and habit changes that support your whole body — not just what you put on your head.

When you ask your hair coach what's actually causing your scalp issues, a good coach won't just hand you a product recommendation. They'll start asking questions right back — about your stress levels, your sleep, your diet, your lifestyle. That back-and-forth is where the real answers live.

Are My Current Hair Products Helping or Hurting?

You might be surprised by the answer. I had a client who came to me completely distraught — she didn't know where to begin healing her scalp and had tried what felt like everything. After just two sessions together, she started to realize that some of the products she had been faithfully using were actually making things worse, not better.

That's an incredibly common discovery, and it's not your fault. The beauty industry is not always honest about what certain ingredients do to a sensitive or imbalanced scalp. Some products that are marketed as "healing" or "natural" can still contain ingredients that aggravate inflammation, disrupt your scalp's natural barrier, or clog your follicles.

Work with your hair coach to look at what you're currently using. Bring the bottles to your session! A knowledgeable coach will have resources to help you identify what's working, what isn't, and what to change without overwhelming you with an entirely new routine all at once.

How Does Stress Affect My Scalp — and What Can I Do About It?

This one catches a lot of people off guard. Stress is one of the biggest contributors to an unhappy scalp, and it's one of the least talked about.

Going back to that same client I mentioned — once she started to see small improvements in her scalp health, something interesting happened. Her stress began to ease up too. That's not a coincidence. When your body is in a constant state of stress, it shows up everywhere: in your skin, your digestion, your sleep, and yes, your scalp. When you start making even small changes that move you toward healing, your whole system responds.

Ask your hair coach how stress is showing up in your specific situation and what realistic, manageable steps you can take to address it. You don't need a complete life overhaul. You need small, sustainable shifts that your body (Scalp included!) can actually feel.

What Does a Realistic Healing Timeline Look Like for Me?

Managing expectations is one of the most important things a hair coach can do for you, and it's something I take seriously with every client.

Healing your scalp is not a one-and-done process. It's a journey that involves layering in new habits, unlearning old ones, and giving your body the time and support it needs to respond. For some clients, they start feeling a difference within a few weeks. For others, it takes longer — especially if there are deeper health factors at play.

What I can tell you is this: if you're only looking for a quick fix, you will keep ending up back at square one. The clients I work with who experience lasting change are the ones who commit to the process — even when progress feels slow. Ask your coach what milestones to look for, what setbacks are normal, and what success actually looks like for your specific goals.

How Do We Work Together — and What Is Expected of Me?

This question matters more than most people realize, and I want to be really clear about how I approach this.

My health coaching sessions are co-led. That means I don't just hand you a protocol and send you on your way. We brainstorm together. We problem-solve together. And more often than not, you already know more about what your body needs than you give yourself credit for — you just need someone to help you see it clearly and hold you accountable to actually doing it.

A good hair coaching session will make you more aware of what you already know. My job isn't to tell you what to do. It's to help you hear yourself, trust yourself, and take the next right step.

So ask your coach how they work. Ask what they expect from you between sessions. Ask how accountability is built into the process. If the answer sounds like a lecture rather than a collaboration, keep looking. The right coaching relationship should feel like a partnership.

What to Expect When You Start Working With a Hair Coach

Whether you come to me in person for a customized scalp treatment or we meet virtually for a health coaching session, the process starts the same way: where you are right now.

We don't skip ahead. We don't overwhelm you with information. We start with what's happening in your body and your life today, and we build from there — one habit, one shift, one discovery at a time.

My coaching sessions are available online, which means no matter where you are, you can access this kind of support. You don't have to have it all figured out before you reach out. You just have to be willing to start.

If you've been sitting with that feeling that something needs to change — you're right. And the first step is simply asking the right questions.
